Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is not a form of submission to an external authority; it doesn’t absolve us from taking responsibility for our own lives. Just because we’ve taken refuge doesn’t mean that the Buddha is going to magically solve all our problems. The Buddha only points out the path; it’s up to us to follow it.
