The Buddha said that suffering is to be understood. This applies not only to our own suffering; we also need to understand the suffering of others. This is different from the approach normally taken by scholars, who revel in studying abstruse concepts and refuting others. But such a pedantic approach to the Buddha-dharma only takes you further and further from its underlying intention. To be of practical benefit, the Buddha-dharma has to be put into practice in daily life, including understanding the suffering of others.
